Is the Game of Hockey In Jeopardy? This was a very interesting conversation with Sean Fitz-Gerald, he’s a senior National Writer for the Athletic who’s written a book, “Before the Lights Go Out” – A Season Inside a Game on the Brink. Being a hockey fan, a player, a hockey dad and a coach, Sean decided to find a Canadian hockey town and dissect what state the game of hockey is in, why enrolment is declining and how it can be fixed. Sean entrenched himself into the city of Peterborough ON, following the Petes in the OHL and the Peterborough minor hockey community looking for answers on the state of hockey in Canada. This was a great discussion on his research, the state of hockey, some of the barriers that make hockey a difficult sport to play and how to help grow the game, what can we do to make hockey more accessible to everyone. Sean dives into the daunting task of writing a book, spending 3 years researching, he shares his own personal experiences as a father of 2 young hockey players and sprinkles in some great stories that he’s covered throughout his journalism career with the NHL, NBA, NFL, Olympics and much more. We hope you enjoy the episode!
